Neil Haas ‘Breaking Out’

Over the past 35 years Neil Haas has collected images from magazines, cuttings, post cards and books that dream various qualities of masculinity, from strength and virility to vulnerability and beauty. The drawings become a portal into Neil’s own longings that intimately enmesh with the collective consciousness of male sexuality he archives from different media.

“When I was young I was always hiding in magazines, I was a voyeur but pretending not to look, and the things I saw as a teenager have never left me.”

Desires turn into dreams, and dreams turn into drawings. They start with a feeling and an image, then a spark of connection and wanting to belong, to make what is fleeting more enduring. As Neil draws he enjoys the freedom in not having a plan, the way he likes to wander through the streets, like a dirty sponge soaking up the sense and sights of masculinity all around.
